If you’re into gaming, then you’ve definitely heard people discuss the Hz of their monitor, which is the rate at which a monitor changes the image on screen. So, how important is this metric, and is there a difference between 60Hz and 144Hz?

The difference between a 144Hz and 60Hz monitor is that a 144Hz monitor updates its on-screen image 144 times per second, while a 60Hz monitor updates its on-screen image 60 times per second. Since its refresh rate is more than twice that of a 60Hz monitor, a 144Hz monitor has better performance for gaming.

The straightforward, technical difference between a 60Hz and 144Hz monitor is this: a 144Hz monitor has a faster refresh rate, so it updates its on-screen image more frequently.

A 60Hz refresh rate means your monitor can display up to 60 images per second. This is the industry standard for most monitors, and it should be good enough for most people.

I upgraded from a 60Hz to a 144Hz monitor, and I can tell there is a difference. Games run much smoother and I can even feel there’s been a small increase in my accuracy.

That being said, your own experience switching from a 60Hz to a 144Hz monitor may vary.

For starters, there is a heated debate in the gaming community over whether the human eye can discern the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz displays.

On one side of the debate, skeptics argue that, even if humans can perceive framerates higher than 60Hz, they cannot act on them–our brains are too slow (supposedly).

Gaming enthusiasts, on the other hand, swear by faster refresh rates as a matter of personal and lived experience. They argue faster refresh rates improve gameplay and have made them more competitive.

Then, there’s also the matter of graphics cards and computing performance. If your GPU is weak and you’re playing graphically-demanding games, then your graphics card may not output 144FPS.

So, while a 144Hz monitor provides the potential to game in 144FPS, in reality you will only experience the framerate your GPU can output.

If your GPU can only output your game at 50FPS, as an example, then a 144Hz monitor will not do you any good. Your monitor’s performance will be limited by the performance of your graphics card.

To sum it up, if you’re not a gamer, you probably don’t need a 144Hz monitor. Most people will be fine with a 60Hz monitor.

After all, we all played and enjoyed games like Halo (30FPS btw) and Golden Eye 007 (16 FPS btw!) as kids, so clearly framerate and refresh rates aren’t everything.

But if you are a gamer, or if you do other activities that require a fast response time, a 144Hz monitor is worth the investment.

Anything beyond 144Hz, however, may not be worth the extra investment, depending on whom you ask.

Still, you might be wondering if this difference is a bit overplayed. Is there a noticeable difference between 60Hz and 144Hz?

Is There A Big Difference Between 60Hz And 144Hz?

The difference between 60Hz and 144Hz is noticeable, but it’s not as big as you might think. If you’re switching from a 60Hz monitor, you’ll see a difference in games and other fast-paced activities. Generally, framerates and refresh rates really only matter for two specific kinds of games: virtual reality and first-person shooters (and other performance-based action games).

So, if you’re playing a game like Apex Legends or Call of Duty, then you’ll see a big difference switching from 60Hz to 144Hz.

It won’t make you a vastly better player. If you’re bad, you’ll still be bad (sorry for the bad news). But, it’s enough of a difference that you’ll definitely notice smoother gameplay.

The most significant difference I’ve noticed switching from a 60Hz to a 144Hz monitor is reduced screen tearing.

If you’re not familiar with screen tearing, it’s when part of the image is displayed on one frame while the other part is displayed on the next frame. This can happen when your monitor can’t keep up with the game’s frame rate.

I also find myself reacting more quickly to things because the image is updated more frequently. This is especially helpful in games like Fortnite, where every millisecond counts.

Do You Need 144Hz For Casual Gaming?

You don’t need 144Hz for casual gaming. If you’re a casual gamer, a 60Hz monitor should be fine. For example, if you only play puzzle games or strategy games, you probably won’t notice the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz.

The main benefit of a higher refresh rate is that it can reduce input lag. This is the delay between pressing a button and the game showing your input.

Input lag can be a big problem for competitive players of first-person shooters because. It can make the difference between winning and losing. However, input lag won’t be a big deal if you’re not playing competitively.

If you’re not sure whether you need a 144Hz monitor, I would say that it depends on your budget and how serious you are about gaming.

If you have the money to spare, a 144Hz monitor is worth the investment. But if you’re on a tight budget, a 60Hz monitor should be good enough.

Is It Worth Buying A 144Hz Monitor?

It’s worth it to buy a 144Hz monitor, but only if you have a high-end graphics card. A 144Hz monitor is great for competitive gaming, but casual gamers may not feel or care about the difference. If you do not have a PC that can output graphics at over 60FPS, then there isn’t much benefit to a 144Hz monitor.

The human brain cannot take action on visual input coming in at a speed greater than 60FPS (although this is hotly debated), but it can still perceive the difference between 60 and 144 FPS video.

If you want to future-proof your gaming experience and you have the budget, then I would say go for the 144Hz monitor.

Many chip manufacturers and software companies are aiming to increase game framerates well into the 1000s over the coming decade. So, clearly there is some benefit to higher framerates, even if those benefits are merely aesthetic.

I can say that getting 144Hz has helped me move up the leaderboard in Rainbow Six Siege, and I am now a rank above where I used to be.

When playing Apex Legends, I can say that the game feels much smoother and I can take down enemies with a bit more ease.

The jump from 60Hz to 144Hz is noticeable and worth it, especially if you are a competitive gamer. But a 144Hz monitor might not be worth the money if you just want to watch Youtube videos and work on documents.

You must also consider if your PC can handle 1440p gaming at 144 FPS. If you have to lower the resolution to get 144 FPS, you are better off getting a 1080p 144Hz monitor.

The build quality is also excellent, and its boasts of being the World’s first KVM gaming monitor. It has two HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort 1.4, three USB 3.0 ports, and one USB C port.

The AOC C24G1A gaming monitor is a good option if you want a cheaper alternative. It has a 24-inch curved screen and a resolution of 1920×1080. It also comes with AMD FreeSync.

The rapid 1ms response time and 144Hz refresh rate make for a smooth gaming experience. I also like that it has an ergonomic design with a fully adjustable stand.

However, the colors are not as accurate as those of the Gigabyte M28U, although they are still decent. The viewing angles are not as good either, but you should still be able to see the action from the center without problems.

If you have an Nvidia GPU and want to take advantage of G-sync, then you may want to consider the LG 27GN950-B. This 4K monitor boasts great responsiveness despite its high resolution.

Best 60Hz Monitor

The HP VH240a 23.8-inch Monitor is the best 60Hz monitor. It has a resolution of 1920×1080 and comes with an HDMI and VGA input. The stand is also adjustable, so you can find the perfect viewing angle from any sitting or standing position.

The only downside is that it doesn’t have a built-in speaker, but you can always use headphones or external speakers. Overall, it’s a great 60Hz monitor for the price.

The Sceptre E2485W-19203RV 24″ monitor is a good option if you want a cheaper alternative.

It has a resolution of 1920×1080 and comes with an HDMI, VGA, and built-in speakers. The monitor is also wall mount ready.

I like the Sceptre E2485W because it is affordable, but it looks expensive with its metal chassis. It has a fast response time of 5ms, and the image is clear and sharp. You also get HDMI input support, which is a nice bonus.

Both of these monitors have great picture quality that will serve well for most gaming purposes. But if You’re a hardcore gamer, you may want to look at something with a higher refresh rate.
