Are The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Worth It?

If you are into streaming or gaming then you know that a good pair of headphones can make a HUGE difference. The music is more crisp, you are able to hear footsteps around the corner. Good headphones are a game changer. In this article I will be reviewing one of my favorite pairs of headphones.

Are the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Worth It?

Yes, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x are absolutely worth it. These headphones are extremely versatile and so regardless of what you use them for (streaming, gaming, listening to music, etc.) you can be assured that you are getting an excellent pair of headphones for a great price.

In fact, this is the pair of headphones that I personally use when I stream, game and listen to music (sometimes all at once). And let me tell you when I first used these headphones I was blown away at how good they sounded.

The music was so crisp and clean. I couldn’t hear anything around me. It was the first time I had purchased a really nice pair of headphones and like I mentioned earlier, it was a major game changer.

I highly recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Headphones (click here to view them on Amazon). You will have a hard time finding a pair of headphones that offers such high quality at such a low price, trust me on that one.

Now that you know that I highly recommend these headphones, I want to go into more detail as to why I recommend them as well as answer some common questions that people have regarding these headphones.

Are the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Good for Gaming?

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones work great for gaming. They have a 45 mm driver size, generally anything over 40 mm is considered really good, and so 45 mm would be considered exceptional. This means you will be able to clearly hear everything going on around you in any game such as footsteps or the loud growl of a monster.

And having personally used these headphones I can assure you that they work great for gaming. I play a lot of Battle Royale games such as Fortnite and Warzone and so being able to hear footsteps and movement is crucial.

I can’t say that I always win my fights, I am not not that good, but I can assure you I always hear them coming!

Nothing but Dubs

Even when I have played other video games such as League of Legends, Dota 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic III, the audio has always been fantastic. In those games hearing footsteps is not as crucial, but the way the characters sound when they fight is just awesome.

I also like that the cables that it comes with are long and detachable. It’s nice having a long cable when you game so you never have to worry about getting yanked around while you play. I was using a small, cheapy XBox headset before I upgraded and one false move and the whole headset would get yanked off my head. Super annoying as you could imagine.

Luckily, with the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x (click here to see on Amazon) I do not have that issue. I can lean back and relax while I am waiting to get bought back and not worry about my headphones flying off my head.

My only complaint for these headphones in regards to gaming with these headphones is that the ear pieces are not made of cloth but rather leather and so sometimes when I game for a long time my ears will get a little sweaty.

Not the end of the world, but if it really bothers you then I would recommend looking at getting some headphone covers like these on Amazon (click here to see them).

Those headphone covers fit easily over the ear pieces and will help to prevent your ears from sweating. Sweaty ears, who would have thunk it right?

But all in all my experience gaming with these headphones has been great and so rest assured if you want these headphones, but are worried about them for gaming, don’t be. They work amazing!

Do the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Have a Mic?

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x does NOT come with a mic. Although the headphones are amazing, you will have to plug them into a mic if you want to use them for things like streaming, gaming or recording.

The mic that I use with my Audio-Technicas is the Blue Yeti Mic (click here to view on Amazon). This mic pairs well with the Audio-Technicas and is a highly regarded microphone when it comes to streaming.

Blue Yeti Mic

I also like that this mic allows me to control the volume of my headphones through the dial that is on the mic. There is also no drivers or software that needs to be installed so you can just plug in your mic, connect your headphones to the mic and you are good to go.

If you do get the Blue Yeti, then I recommend getting a boom arm as well. It does come with a stand, but the boom arm is just really so much better when you are streaming.

It takes up less room on your streaming desk as well which is always a major plus. The boom arm that I use is the Tonor (which you can view here on Amazon).

This boom arm has worked nicely with my Blue Yeti mic and I like the fact that it came with cable ties and 2 pop filters. It’s also super affordable and so you won’t be breaking the bank buying a boom arm. Save that money for your gaming PC.

So although the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x does not come with a mic, as you can see there are great options for you to choose from to pair with your headphones.

Is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Wireless?

There is both a wireless and a wired version of the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x; however, you are able to use the wireless version both wired and wireless. The wireless pair of headphones will cost you a bit more, but it will be easier to pair to devices such as your phone. You will also have to charge the wireless headphones using a USB charging cable.

If you want to check out the wireless version of the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, click here to see it on Amazon.

Personally, I just went with the wired version. From what I have read the wired version has a slightly better sound quality than the wireless version, but nothing major and most people won’t even notice.

Also, since i use my headphones only for streaming, gaming and listening to music at my computer, I didn’t want to deal with keeping my headphones charged all the time.

To me it would be a hassle if I was streaming and then mid stream my headphones were dying. No bueno. Not to mention even if I were to plug them in to charge while I was streaming that would be just another USB port that I would be using on my PC.

And frankly, with a webcam, microphone, El Gato Streamdeck, controller, mouse, keyboard, etc. I am kind of running out of USB ports! So being able to just plug my wired headphones into my mic and not having to worry about the battery dying helps a ton.

But if you will be using your headphones for more than just streaming and gaming, maybe for like working out at the gym or listening to music on your phone when you are out and about, then the wireless version totally makes sense for you.

I think it really just depends how you will be using the headphones that will decide if you should go wired or wireless. Honestly, you can’t go wrong either way though.

How Long do the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Last?

With proper care, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x should last anywhere between 5 and 10 years, maybe even more. These headphones are high quality and extremely durable. The only thing you may have to replace on these headphones are the earpads which may wear down over time.

I have had my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x for almost a year now and I have had zero issues with them. I have even dropped them a few times sadly and no issues whatsoever. And this may not seem like much, but trust me I have purchased headphones that worked for about a year before I had to replace them. Crazy right? Better to just get something quality like the Audio-Technicas in my honest opinion.
