What Does monkaS Mean On Twitch? – Origin & How To Use It

If you have been in a Twitch stream you have probably seen the word “monkaS” or have heard of the monkaS emote. But what does this word mean? And better yet, what does that emote mean?

In this article I go over the meaning of “monkaS”, the origin, and how you can use this emote on Twitch and Youtube as a viewer and as a streamer.

What Does monkaS Mean On Twitch?

On Twitch, the monkaS emote conveys a feeling of nervousness or uneasiness. It is typically used during uneasy, or anxiety inducing moments of a stream such as the streamer walking through the woods in a horror game or hiding in a game while there are enemies around them.

However, like most emotes, what exactly this emote means and conveys is really up to the individual user.

Some viewers will send the monkaS emote if the streamer’s mom calls them on stream or if their dog chews through one of their cables. But I guess these moments can be uncomfortable and so it makes sense.

monkaS Origin?

The monkaS emote is based on Pepe the Frog, a cartoon created by Matt Furie in 2005. However, the emote itself first appeared in a 4chan thread back in 2011 as a meme. The meme would later become a Twitch emote when it was uploaded to BTTV on March 16th, 2016 by Monkasen.

It would later be uploaded to FFZ on September 24th, 2016 by FabulousPotato69.

But even after it was uploaded to BTTV and FFZ, it was still not very popular. In fact, the monkaS emote did not start to get really popular until February 2017 when it was uploaded to popular Twitch streamer Forsen’s Reddit page.

From there the emote exploded and became one of the most popular emotes on Twitch. It is currently used on over 600,000 Twitch channels and is a favorite amongst Twitch viewers.

How To Use The monkaS Emote In Twitch Chat?

  1. Add the FFZ or the BTTV Google extensions to your Twitch account.
  2. Make sure the streamer has the monkaS emote enabled on their channel.
  3. Type “monkaS” in the streamer’s Twitch chat (without the quotation marks) and send the message.
  4. The monkaS emote will now appear in the stream’s chat.

Make sure you type monkaS exactly as it appears with the correct spelling and capitalization. If you don’t, it won’t work. Also, a streamer must have the emote enabled on either BTTV or FFZ in order for it to work.

Another cool thing is that if you are on PC, you can just click the little emoji button and select which emote you want to send in Twitch chat.

If you are a streamer, I highly recommend you add this emote to your channel as it is one of the most popular emotes on all of Twitch.

If you need more help I wrote an entire article about adding BTTV emotes to your Twitch account and adding FFZ to your Twitch account. These guides are helpful for both streamers and viewers.

How To Use The monkaS Emote On Youtube?

  1. Add the BTTV Google extensions to your Youtube account.
  2. Make sure the streamer has the monkaS emote enabled on their channel.
  3. Type “monkaS” in the streamer’s chat (without the quotation marks) and send the message.
  4. The monkaS emote will now appear in the stream’s chat.

If you need more help I wrote an entire article about adding BTTV emotes to your Youtube account. This guide will help regardless if you are a streamer or a viewer.

Unfortunately, FFZ and Youtube Gaming are not currently compatible and so you will only be able to use this emote on Youtube with the BTTV extension.

When To Use The monkaS Emote?

The monkaS emote is best used in tense situations that invoke anxiety, apprehension, suspense or uncertainty. This could be during moments in a horror game, or waiting to see the results of a tournament that the streamer played in.

It’s common to see entire chats spam this emote in situations that I mentioned above. Having a ton of monkaS emotes in chat only adds to the nerves and anticipation.

Why Is The monkaS Emote Not Appearing In Chat?

Here are common reasons why the monkaS emote may not be appearing in chat:

  1. The viewer trying to use the emote does not have the BTTV or FFZ extension.
  2. The streamer does not have the BTTV or FFZ extension.
  3. The streamer does not have the monkaS emote enabled on their channel.
  4. The viewer is trying to use the emote on mobile.
  5. The person did not type “monkaS” correctly.
  6. Twitch or Youtube banned the emote.

The reasons listed above are the most common reasons why the monkaS emote won’t work in chat.

If you feel like you have checked off everything listed above, and the monkaS emote still won’t work for you, then check out my article here where I go into more detail as to why your emotes may not be working and how to fix it.

How To Pronounce monkaS?

The correct way to pronounce MonkaS is “monka-s.” Monk, like the word monk, then the ‘a’ makes an ‘uh’ sound as in the word asleep, and lastly the letter ‘s’ is pronounced normally. Monk-a-S.

What Does The Slang Word monkaS Mean?

MonkaS is a slang word used to say people are feeling scared. It is short for “MonkaScared.” MonkaS was created to communicate a scared state of mind which the monkaS emote conveys.

In fact, you will sometimes here streamers say monkaS if they are doing something scary or something that makes them uneasy on stream.

But this is rare and the emote is usually just used by viewers who are reacting to a certain situation on stream.

While the emote’s name comes from the user who uploaded it to BTTV, MonkaSen, it gained new meaning over time as it became more popular and more commonly used on Twitch.

These days it is generally accepted that MonkaS stands for MonkaScared; however, most people still refer to the emote by its name, monkaS.
