What Does MonkaW Mean On Twitch? – Origin & How To Use It

If you have been in a Twitch stream you have probably seen the word “monkaW” or have heard of the monkaW emote. But what does this word mean? And better yet, what does that emote mean?

In this article I go over the meaning of “monkaW”, the origin, and how you can use this emote on Twitch and Youtube as a viewer and as a streamer.

What Does monkaW Mean On Twitch?

On Twitch, the monkaW emote conveys a feeling of uneasiness. It is typically used during uneasy, or anxiety inducing moments of a stream. Both monkaS and monkaW can be used interchangeably as they are essentially the same looking emote except that monkaW is a zoomed-in version of monkaS.

monkaW Origin?

MonkaW is an emote based on Pepe the Frog, a cartoon created by Matt Furie in 2005. The monkaW emote was originally uploaded to both BTTV and FFZ by voparoS_ on September 26th, 2017. It is currently used on over 250,000 Twitch channels and is one of the most popular emotes on the platform.

Although the emote is based on Pepe the Frog, the real idea for the emote itself came from the monkaS emote. The monkaS emote was originally used on 4chan in 2011, and has since grown into one of the most popular emotes/memes on the internet.

In fact, the monkaS emote has inspired other great emotes such as monkaH, monkaHmm, and monkaEyes. MonkaW is just another spinoff of monkaS.

Although monkaW is just a zoomed-in version of monkaS, it is still an extremely popular emote. In fact, it is the 19th most popular emote on BTTV and the most popular monkaS emote alternative.

How To Use The monkaW Emote In Twitch Chat?

  1. Add the FFZ or the BTTV Google extensions to your Twitch account.
  2. Make sure the streamer has the monkaW emote enabled on their channel.
  3. Type “monkaW” in the streamer’s Twitch chat (without the quotation marks) and send the message.
  4. The monkaW emote will now appear in the stream’s chat.

Make sure you type monkaW exactly as it appears with the correct spelling and capitalization. If you don’t, it won’t work. Also, a streamer must have the emote enabled on either BTTV or FFZ in order for it to work.

Another cool thing is that if you are on PC, you can just click the little emoji button and select which emote you want to send in Twitch chat.

If you need more help I wrote an entire article about adding BTTV emotes to your Twitch account and adding FFZ to your Twitch account. These guides are helpful for both streamers and viewers.

How To Use The monkaW Emote On Youtube?

  1. Add the BTTV Google extensions to your Youtube account.
  2. Make sure the streamer has the monkaW emote enabled on their channel.
  3. Type “monkaW” in the streamer’s chat (without the quotation marks) and send the message.
  4. The monkaW emote will now appear in the stream’s chat.

If you need more help I wrote an entire article about adding BTTV emotes to your Youtube account. This guide will help regardless if you are a streamer or a viewer.

Unfortunately, FFZ and Youtube Gaming are not currently compatible and so you will only be able to use this emote on Youtube with the BTTV extension.

When To Use The monkaW Emote?

MonkaW is typically used in chat during intense, nerveracking moments on the stream. This could be waiting for a big announcement or seeing the streamer’s health drop to 1hp in a video game where they are fighting a boss. MonkaW can also be used when someone feels uneasy.

If you have been in a stream during some of the more intense moments then you have probably seen the chat spam either the monkaW emote or the monkaS emote.

As I mentioned earlier, these emotes pretty much mean the same thing, but some viewers may prefer using one over the other.

Why Is The monkaW Emote Not Appearing In Chat?

Here are common reasons why the monkaW emote may not be appearing in chat:

  1. The viewer trying to use the emote does not have the BTTV or FFZ extension.
  2. The streamer does not have the BTTV or FFZ extension.
  3. The streamer does not have the monkaW emote enabled on their channel.
  4. The viewer is trying to use the emote on mobile.
  5. The person did not type “monkaW” correctly.
  6. Twitch or Youtube banned the emote.

The reasons listed above are the most common reasons why the monkaW emote won’t work in chat.

If you feel like you have checked off everything listed above, and the monkaW emote still won’t work for you, then check out my article here where I go into more detail as to why your emotes may not be working and how to fix it.

How To Pronounce monkaW?

The correct way to pronounce MonkaW is “monka-w.” Monk, like the word monk, then the ‘a’ makes an ‘uh’ sound as in the word asleep, and lastly the letter ‘w’ is pronounced normally. Monk-a-W.

What Does monkaW Mean In Gaming?

In gaming, monkaW conveys that something is intense or nerve-racking. This would include situations such as walking through a haunted house in a game or waiting to found out the results of a tournament you were in.

The meaning of monkaW is the same whether you are gaming or watching streams on Twitch and Youtube. When you are watching a stream, and the streamer is going through an intense moment in the game, it is not uncommon for chat to spam the monkaW or monkaS emote.

Difference Between monkaW And monkaS?

The main difference between monkaW and monkaS is the way they look. They are essentially the same emote, however monkaW is more zoomed-in and you can’t see the sweat on Pepe the Frog’s face. However, the meaning of monkaW and monkaS is the same.

Of course you will have people claim that monkaW is a more intense version of monkaS, but this is up for interpretation. Overall, the meaning is the same, even if one is supposedly more intense than the other.
